If I am not wrong PFE uses vis.js in timeline,
is it planned to upgrade timeline to the last version of vis.js?
I saw many interesting features like
background areas
order groups
custom styling

and a lot more...

We don't use vis.js. We use a prev. version which is still maintained parallel to vis.js. I'm not sure if vis.js has the same features as the version we use. It was not the same in the past. You can probably check if the features are the same.
Note: lazy loading and drag-&-drop are our own extensions. They don't exist in the native timeline impl.
