<p:editor not setting text or allowing me to insert text

I am setting the text to the editor value="#{backingBean.value} and I will type something into the editor and then I have a macro insert <p:commandButton that I want to insert the macro text at the end of the editor text. I have tried calling the backing bean and setting value = value + "My MacroText" and nothing happens. If I debug it I find that what ever I have type hasn't been set in the value yet. Is there anyway to append text to the editor using javascript or something like that?
