calling primefaces generated function from javascript

is it possible to call the functions generated by pf from our own js functions.
e.g. if i have a dialog with widgetVar dlg, then is it possible to call dlg.show() from my own js function. I tried that using jquery but it didn't work.

Yes it should work, widgetVar is a global variable for page.
