LazyDataModel does not work with request scope

It appears that the LazyDataModel will not work with request scope. Has anyone else run into this issue. I get the following exception when I use request scope:

java.lang.ClassCastException: javax.faces.model.ListDataModel cannot be cast to org.primefaces.model.LazyDataModel

If I change the scope to SessionScoped then the exception does not occur and the datatable behaves as expected.
