CalendarUtils gets lost with String "" empty values

I guess I found a possible issue in the Calendar component when it's built programatically! When I programatically build it the "CalendarUtils.getValueAsString(...)" gets lost when the backing bean set its value as a "" value. By the way, this util class doesn't seem to avoid the values with the String empty "" but only when it's null, so I got the IllegalArgumentException at the DateFormat.format(...). Am I right?
