I might look at trying to patch the DataTable code as a last resort.

To be honest, if I have to do this sort of thing to achieve functionality that is really quite common in enterprise-scale applications then PrimeFaces loses significant value as a component library imo.

Hmmm I disagree to a certain extend (although I do like to have the matchmode available in the load method)

The reason I disagree is that for me declaring the matchmode in the xhtm and not having to do it programatically in a jpa2 querybuilder is an optimization and you can still, very easily, realise you 'enterprise' usecase. Declaring it statically in the xhtml or in java does not differ a lot.
In addition it was primarily intended for non-lazy mode where you cannot control the filtering
