Saving an Editable Diagram Component

I'm using the new diagram component very similar to the editable demo and having a lot of success with it.
I'm looking to save the users edits back to the database in a LOB column but I'm finding that the DiagramModel and other diagram components are not implementing Serializable. Am I missing something or is there another way to save the state of the component?
