Progress bar based on database interaction

Hey guys I'm trying to get the progress bar to work in relation to doing an update or query from database. It seems that the progress bar starts it's progress after the function is done. I need it to asynchronously update as it's doing something server side. If this is to hard to explain then I will settle for showing ajax status when something is being done server side.
