Ajax loader icon not showing for p:commandButton ajax calls

I have a mobile application migrated from pf 4.x and pf mobile 1.0 snapshot. I have everything working with a custom theme in place.

I haven't been able to get the ajax loader to show for ajax calls initiated from p:commandButton. The ajax calls do in fact complete but no loader icon is displayed.

I am also using p:menuitem components in a few places and the ajax loader displays for each of those.

I am on pf 5.0.8.

Anyone else having the same problem? Is this a known issue on 5.0.8?
