blank page after npm run build with "syntax error: unexpected token <"

I just picked up Sapphire and took v.3.3.0 for a spin.

'Npm run serve' looks good, but after a successful 'npm run build', the page is blank and I see these errors in Chrome developer:
Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token '<'
app.2c68d01b.js:1 Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token '<'

I tried out an older version with 3.2.0 and same issue. Any advice?
