DataTable Date Sort column Issue

I have added a date column in my primeNg dataTable. The date being passed in is in this format: "MM-DD-YYYY". I have also added the sort property to the column and it does not work as expected. It is sorting by month only not by the entire date. So i get something like this when sorting in ascending order:
02-01-2017
04-01-2016
07-01-2014
11-01-2016
12-01-2016
Is there a property or workaround to get this to sort properly?
