Soft keyboard with calendar and dropdown controls

I notice with the demo showcase that selecting the calendar and dropdown controls automatically invokes the soft keyboard on my Android device. This causes the screen to adjust and slows down data entry on larger forms when the user just wants to touch to make their selection. Is it possible to avoid this?
