tabPanel selected does not work

I have 3 simple tabPanels on a dialog. I want to set the reset the tabView back to the first tab when they close (or open) the dialog. So I have an event on onAfterHide of the dialog. On the tabPanel I have [selected]="selectFirstTab".

selectFirstTab is a boolean on the component. In onAfterHide I set selectFirstTab = true.

It doesn't work. I tried a number of other approaches but basically I can't bind [selected] to a property of the component. Any ideas?
