p-calendar - defaultDate doesn't seem to be working

In p-calendar, the defaultDate doesn't seem to be working.

I am trying to load p-calendar with an value that comes from database or with a fixed value. I tried using several formats of the dates, none of them worked but gave me an error : date.getMonth is not a function

Any help is appreciated.
