p-calendar onSelect vs onBlur

I'm using the onSelect event to process user selection using the datepicker, which is working flawlessly.
Now I also want to capture manual user input using the keyboard. For that I think I need the onBlur event, but $event.target.value gives me the 'old' value of the input field.

How should I implement the same changeevent behaviour as selecting using the calendar with manual input?
