p-calendar accepting invalid dates (in India only)

We have p-calendar in use like this:

          <p-calendar [(ngModel)]="endDate" [showTime]="true" appendTo="body"></p-calendar>

Very simple. On my dev box and on our demo box it works fine. But in the test environment, in India, it will accept invalid dates. For example, if I type in "abc" it gets accepted. Any known reason why this might happen (and how to prevent)?
