Populating Spinner Component from Async Call

I am having problems populating a spinner control or toggle button from the componentDidMount life cycle. I can set the initial value of the components but not from an async call. It seems like once the value has been set in these controls you cannot change it from an external data source. It works for other components like the input box but not for these.
