What is the proper way of styling components?

I was playing with the growl component, and I really like everything about it.
I have trouble understanding on how do I change it to suit my needs.

I ran into a problem where growl would show up under my nav bar because of zIndex.
I tried to find how to change that property, but to no avail.

I later needed to move the growl a bit lower, for which I modified the primeui-ng-all.min.css file.
Is there a way to add additional styles to components?

I suppose that's silly question, as I can simply override css that I want.
